THE KOREAN THESIS (unedited)

Part II cont…

David woke up because Sunshine was rattling him like a toy. He was already on the gates of dreamland when suddenly he heard her voice. He opened his eyes and took some time to realize that he was inside a car. “Korea”, David reminded himself. “We are here, Dave…” He could clearly hear Sunshine’s voice. He gazed at the direction where Sunshine was pointing. The building was big. It was evident that he was going to stay in there. It had a European look. They went inside and took an elevator and stopped at the third floor. It took them several steps when Sunshine pointed at a door that had a sign, “Guest Room”. David got in. Sunshine informed him that lunch will be served in his room and there is dinner set up with Director Park. He gave her a nod and she gave her his keys.

David unpacked his things. The room was quite big for just one person. It had a hot and cold shower. There were no televisions. He placed his stuff inside the cabinet and lied down. He was snoring after a few seconds.

There was a familiar voice that was faintly resounding in his dream. It was familiar. Then he realized it was Sunshine. His eyes were fighting to keep him asleep. He forced himself to wake up and checked his digital watch. It showed that the time was eight in the morning. However, the scene outside showed him that it was afternoon. He realized that he did not set up his watch for local time. Still wearing the same clothes, David answered the door. What he saw awakened him, definitely! Seeing Sunshine in a red long silk dress revealing her wonderful busts was like hot water poured on him. He was awake. His senses were blaring up. His thoughts cried out, “God I love, Korea!” Sunshine realized at once that David was not ready yet. Good thing she came an hour early. But it was clear that she came there to wake him up. Sunshine thought of the word to use and said.

“Jetlagged?” David stared at her and responded.

“Yeah, it’s eight in the morning from where I came from. I hope you understand?”

“Yeah, that’s why I came here early to make sure you are ready.

“Thanks!” David replied.

David motioned for Sunshine to get inside the room. By the looks of it, she had no choice but to grab the chair near the study table. He immediately jumped in to the bathroom for a quick shower. Sunshine examined the study table. She stared at the picture on the center of the tale. The man was wearing a soldier’s uniform with one knee on the ground. There was a kid standing next to him wearing his helmet and saluting. The kid was obviously proud of the man. Sunshine noticed that the child resembled David. It was a father and son picture. Fifteen minutes later David got out of the shower with only a towel decently covering the lower part of his body. The chiseled abdomen revealed itself naturally against the Caucasian skin. Sunshine could not her but stare at him. David saw the wide-eyed Sunshine staring at him like a kid behind a candy store window. He thought of one word, “seduction”. He smiled at her and it ended her day dreaming. Sunshine cleared her throat and decided that she needed to do something outside. It was an obvious excuse to be outside. She suddenly thought of checking their reservation for the restaurant. David gave her a mischievous smile and thought the words, “got you”.

It took David twenty minutes to get ready. It was time for him to wear his professional character sealed but the newly shaved face with the business attire. David faced the mirror and said “Yeah, definitely I am dressed to kill.” He formed a gun using his fingers, blew out some smoke and put it back inside his pocket. “Game on!” He muttered. He killed his lights, AC and made sure that nothing was plugged in to the wall sockets. He turned the handle of the door and saw Sunshine standing outside. He gave her a killer smile – the one that he uses to seduce girls.

David made all the “gentleman gestures” that he can think of while they were going down. He cannot understand himself. Deep within something was rolling out. He was making plans. He was luring her, for sure.

The drive to the restaurant took them an hour. It was worth the wait. David’s stomach was on the verge of rebellion. He had no chance to eat lunch. He took a mental note to throw away the food that was served to his room. Snapping back to reality David gazed at the elegant restaurant. The design was Asian with flower pots at the corners, and a water fountain on the center. He counted twenty tables inside and ten outside with the view of the city. The people eating there were all dressed up, well enough to be mistaken as people from Wall Street New York. Unknowingly he uttered, “God I love Korea!” They sat down. Sunshine mentioned to David that Director Park will not be around for dinner because of an urgent meeting with the University’s President. At once when David heard this he exclaimed, “God I love Korea!” He had the night for them.

The Korean Thesis

By: Silver Cepeda

Part I

He arrived in Incheon International Airport at seven in the morning. The weather was cloudy and it was cold. David grasped for air as he carried his baggage towards the immigration booth. “Korea, at last…” He sighed. Third year into History Major, he was in Korea to fill on missing hole in his thesis. David chose the Korean War as his topic. He was fond of it. His father a marine captain died during the war. He thought that his thesis could incite interest to those people who forgot about the Americans who sacrificed their lives. It was his personal tribute to his father whom he had so little time to be with because of his duty. For David, his father’s spirit was in this country called South Korea, the land where he bled and died.

David got cleared from immigration. He followed the people in front of him – hoping it was the exit. Korean alphabet was an enigma that he needed to crack. To put in a simple term, he cannot read it. The irony was seen by one of the panelist for his thesis defense. His topic was Korean War. The loophole that was discovered was the fact that he has never ever been to Korea. David has to face it; he has to show the vultures his passport that he was in the country. Since, he wanted to ace the thesis, he complied. Hence, he has to go to Korea and study for three weeks the basics of the language, at least! Mr. Stephen, David’s thesis adviser offered help. The man has a friend who is a professor in Seoul University. The arrangement was properly made for David to stay and study in Korea. Based on what he was told, he would have a University student as a teacher. The said student was also taking History as a major. Familiarity of the country was the main reason as to why he is in Korea.

Exit! David smiled as he read the familiar words. He was heading on the right direction. He saw a girl holding a sign that screamed his name, “DAVID BRIGHTON.” He stared at the lady and thought of the phrase: “thank you Professor Stephen!”

Sunshine is an intelligent twenty five year old lady. She took up History as her major in Seoul University. She was pretty, standing up to five feet and eleven inches. Her height was above the average Korean women. Her features made her American blood stand out. She was one of the products of the Korean War. Her mother had relations with an American soldier. But the relationship did not end up well as what her mother would always say. Her mother’s childhood sweetheart was the one who took care of them. He became the father to her and later on, married her mother. Time went by and Sunshine got tired of asking about her real father. She doesn’t even know the man’s name.

Growing up in the Korean society was hard for Sunshine. Her American name was for starters something that distinguished her from the rest of the children. Her mother for some unknown reason decided to give her one. She suffered ridicule during her childhood days. Her elementary days were filled with memories of moments spent on the comfort room – crying! They called her the “AmKor” (American Korean) or at most and worst an American pig. Thus, making friends was slim to none. However, Sunshine had a gift. She was intelligent! She was always on top of her class. As she progressed on her education she made a name for herself with some followers who became her close friends. They were amazed at her wit. Sunshine learned that the only to stop the ridicule, the insults and the pain was to show them that she is the best. She got the respect that she wanted.

Sunshine took up History as her major because it was her favorite subject. For her, knowing about Korea’s history was a way to show everyone that she knows her country. As expected she was the best student – top of her class and department (History majors). Sunshine became the instant teacher’s pet. This is why when the Director got a call from his American friend needing help; Sunshine was the first one that he thought of.

Mr. Park the Director for the History Department of Seoul University never regretted choosing Sunshine. She was known for obedience and it was basically understood that she would agree. Sunshine accepted the job to teach an American student the basics of Korean Language for three hours a day. It was more of an obligation for her since the Director himself made the request. Her tutorial role was scheduled to last for three weeks and she will be paid ten dollars an hour. Sunshine, loved the latter. She was thinking of the things that she can buy with the money and most especially the gift that she wanted to give her mother. The job that she accepted was the reason as to why she was at the airport at six in the morning waving a big sign that said, “Mr. David Brighton.” Sadly, the flight was delayed.

David stared at the girl raising the sign that had his name. He was amazed with the girl’s perfect race mixture. At a glance he knew that she had an American blood in her. The girl in front of him stands high with beauty and a contrast of simple elegance. She had an unmistakably white and fine skin, long black hair, tall nose, a body curve that defines her, definitely Asian eyes with brown color. She was the epitome of what David calls “beautiful”. Caught with so much amazement, David could only utter: “Asian-American!”

Sunshine saw David on the way out. The American features allowed him to stand out among the other passengers. After accepting the job from the Director, Sunshine imagined her student to be an old guy with big round eyeglasses – the ones she sees on American quiz bees. But the guy that was approaching was way too different. Her student definitely looked older. However, the gap she thought, couldn’t be too much. He had a muscular body, black hair, deep eyes, tall nose, and sporting a beard. Something inside her stirred when he saw the man.

Sunshine snapped back to reality from her bedazzled state when she heard the man said, “Asian-American.” She realized that the man was barely on breathing distance her. She stretched out her arm and introduced herself with enthusiasm. “Sunshine Park! That is my name…” Shocked David grabbed her hand and shook it.

“David Brighton as your sign says!”

“How was the trip Mr. David?” She replied.

“Please call me Dave… It was just fine!”

“That’s great to know. The university car is parked at the corner
so come and follow me.”

David was amazed at the girl’s skill of his language. The foreign was accent was there. But what shocked him the most was the fact that girl was able to talk to him with confidence. He got so interested. David placed his luggage at the trunk of the car. He sat down at the back surprised that Sunshine was there. He immediately noticed her long white legs. David realized that she was wearing a short skirt that revealed her skin from knee down. Unfortunately, jet lag took toll on him and dozed off with Sunshine’s legs as the last image on his mind.
